Katrina "Kat" Karamakov is a show host in New York City, and former student at the National Academy of Dance in Sydney.

Biography[]

Kat grew up in a famous dance family as the daughter of ballerina Natasha Willis and choreographer Sebastian Karamakov. While her older half-brother, Ethan Karamakov, was the golden child, Kat grew up resenting her parents' expectations of her doing ballet, and rebelling. Due to her mother's job, they travelled to many places, but while Kat enjoyed meeting new people she always felt that everything was about her mother and never her, like when was 10 and her mother flew out of Singapore, forgetting that Kat was still at their hotel. While her brother started at the National Academy of Dance, Kat went to junior high with Sammy Lieberman, Abigail Armstrong, and Georgia. She met Abigail when they were 5 and were close friends with Abigail until around 11/12 years old when Abigail became too much of a "bunhead" like Kat's mother.

Throughout her friendships growing up, many of Kat's friends would develop crushes on Ethan, only for him to eventually break their hearts, leaving Kat to comfort them. This resulted in her becomes cold with friends who chose to date her brother. She was friends with Isabelle, who was Ethan's Pas de Deux partner, and warned her when Isabelle got feelings for Ethan; however, Isabelle went on to date Ethan, and Kat cut her out as a friend.

First Year[]

Semester 1[]

Kat auditioned for the Academy per her parents' expectation, and met Tara Webster when she mistakenly gave her wrong directions, causing Tara to change in the boys' dressing room. Though Kat tries to be friendly, Tara is advised by Abigail to ignore her, and Kat goofs off during auditions. She takes Tara with her to a third years' rooftop party, but after Tara is humiliated, she ignores Kat. When Abigail attempts to sabotage Tara's audition, Kat calls her out on it, and saves Tara, earning her trust. Kat is accepted into the Academy (Learning to Fly, Part 1).

While Kat initially was hoping to room with Tara, but Abigail got there first. They continue to hang out. When Isabelle and two other third years dare Kat to jump off the top of the docks with another first year girl as an initiation ritual, Kat chooses Tara Webster, and they jump despite Kat's terror. Ethan finds them, yelling at Kat, and Isabelle runs off with her, laughing (Week Zero). Sammy is moved out of Kat's room, and is replaced with an unhygienic girl. When Ethan breaks up with Isabelle, Kat refuses to comfort her, telling Isabelle "told you so." She rants to Tara and Sammy about how her friends always fall for Ethan and get broken hearts. Now that Abigail is openly hostile to Tara, Kat and Sammy try to help her convince Abigail to switch roommates. Abigail refuses to switch, and instead emails the school a pros-and-cons list Tara made for Ethan, revealing her crush on him, leaving Kat angry with Tara (Behind Barres).

In Pas de Deux class, Kat and Sean are assigned as partners, and have to do a trust exercise where they take turns being blindfolded and leading the other, which they both struggle with. They go to the beach with Tara, and coincidentally Ethan is there playing soccer with other third years, frustrating Kat. When Tara confronts Ethan later that week and he dismisses her, she cries in the bathroom, and Kat comforts her, confessing she hates that her friends pursue Ethan only because she hates seeing them get hurt (Minefield).

During Patrick's Saturday class, he tries to physically correct Christian, resulting in Christian angrily leaving class. Kat Karamakov confronts Christian about it, and he claims he's just repulsed by touch. Kat touches his face, and when he doesn't move, she declares he's just repulsed by people. Christian goes to class and, for the first time, puts in effort (Real Men Don't Dance). When Natasha comes to teach a week of classes at the Academy, Kat resents her presence, and Natasha attempts to fawn over Tara to irritate Kat. When Tara's idolization of Natasha becomes blind to Natasha's neglect of Kat, she and Tara fight until Tara stands up to Natasha instead (Perfection). Sammy begins to hint at Kat - who has never had a crush before - that he has a crush on someone in their class. Kat worries it's her, but eventually Sammy confesses to her and Tara that it's Abigail, and Kat calls him a "traitor" for it. Kat finds out that Tara is also back to pursuing Ethan, and still disapproves of it but is not longer angry; however, once Kat sees Christian coming back from a fight, she views him a in light, and develops a crush on Christian (Crush Test Dummies).

When Kat witnesses Abigail having a mental breakdown over body insecurities, Kat attempts to comfort her, but Abigail insists that her body is no longer the ideal type for a ballerina now (Growing Pains). When Sammy posts a video of her dancing to a Myles Kelly song online, it goes viral, and she's invited to be in his music video. While there, Myles is impressed by her blunt honesty about the video's poor choreography and costumes, and she helps him change the video. They take a night walk along the Sydney Harbour, and Myles kisses Kat. He offers for her to come on tour with him, but she turns him down (Heartbeat),

Aaron Dean visits Christian at school after getting kicked out by his grandmother, and flirts with Kat when he sees her taking seagull photos outside with her camera, though she rebuffs him. Aaron meets Tara, Kat, and Sammy, and tells them stories about Christian; however, Aaron begins telling stories of Christian's criminal past, shocking them. When Aaron sneaks out at night, and Kat's camera goes missing, Abigail tells Kat it must have been Aaron. Ethan tells Christian to get Kat's camera back. Kat and Sammy privately tell each other that maybe they don't know Christian at all. When Kat finds her camera wedged in between couch cushions, she apologizes to Christian for suggesting it was Aaron, and they have lunch together (Through the Looking Glass).

Abigail's little sister, Paige, visits her and is delighted to see Kat again after so many years. Instead of Abigail, Paige has more fun with Kat and Sammy, and they take her to Luna Park. When Paige wanders off from Abigail, Kat and Sammy find her in Sammy's room waiting for them, wanting to play a board game. Abigail is hurt when she walks in, thinking they ditched her, and Abigail runs off. Kat reprimands Paige, as Abigail had been worried looking for her (One Perfect Day).

As exams approach, Kat goes through her dance exams with relative ease but struggles with academic classes. Kat realizes that Ethan is flirting with Tara now, and Tara admits that he kissed her. Kat warns Ethan to stay away from Tara, saying he's only pursuing her for his ego. When she sees Christian skateboarding, she stops studying and asks him to teach her. Tara asks for Kat's help learning how to kiss and, though she disapproves of Tara and Ethan together, Kat tries to help Tara learn to kiss on her teddy-bear. Later she agrees with Christian - when they see Tara and Ethan kissing - that "it's weird" seeing them together (Pressure). During Open Week, Natasha came to Kat's classes with the other parents, but used the time to do a mother-daughter interview with Kat as well, upsetting Kat. At the end of the week, she walked the Sydney Harbour Bridge with Sammy and Tara (Family).

Semester 2[]

Kat spent her holidays with her mother in Europe, and got in trouble with Natasha throughout the trip. In Paris, she met Lucas Hewitt, and started dating him in part because Natasha disliked him. Since Kat's roommate was cut at the end of Semester 1, Tara moves into her room. Despite classes starting the next morning, Kat and Lucas go to a club, and she talks Tara into going, though Tara ends up stuck outside the club instead. After realizing she doesn't mesh with Kat's undisciplined daily routine, Tara moves back in with Abigail, which Kat understands (Turning Points). After Kat skips lessons and is caught kissing Lucas by Miss Raine, Mr. Kennedy assigns her community service as a local children's center. At the center, she impresses the children with her dancing, and agrees to teach the girls ballet. She promises to take them to a studio taping of a dance show the next day. Petra Hoffman arrives at the Academy, and is put in Kat's room. Petra hides a lost dog in her room, earning Kat's admiration for rule-breaking. When the dog escapes, Kat helps Petra find him, forgetting her promise to the children's center. She arrives too late, disappointing them all (My Life En Pointe).

As Kat's 16th birthday arrives, she feels neglected by Tara, who's been spending time doing private lessons as per her scholarship requirements. Kat's mother blows off her birthday to continue a tour, so Kat throws a house party instead. Sean offers to DJ for free for her. Her mood falls as she hears strangers at the party bad-mouthing her, and when Abigail needles at her when Tara shows up late. Lucas takes advantage of Kat being drunk, and tries to take advantage of her, but is stopped by Christian. Kat cries to Christian, and admits that she's "seriously not perfect" which is why she felt they were so similar. She kisses Christian, only for him to run off after Tara when she witnesses it. Confused, Kat sees that everyone's been sent a photo of Christian and Tara kissing, and realizes Tara cheated on Ethan. When the police are called on the party, Mr. Kennedy puts Kat on academic probation (Free Falling).

Gap Year[]

When she tells her brother Ethan of this he basically tells her that he knows his little sister, and she is not a cheerleader. She listens to her brother and agrees. She gets back into the academy, but her relationship with Christian sends her friendship with Tara down the drain. Christian and Kat then shared a kiss, but Kat did not go through with the relationship because she didn't want to hurt Tara, but this does not stop Christian from continuously flirting with her. Later Tara finds out and Christian kisses Kat again and they become a couple. Tara is at first angry and shocked and Kat would do anything to get back her best friend. She gets her chance when Tara invites her to a circus day. They are the only people to catch each other on the trapeze and they give each other a big hug. Kat continues into the academy only to find out that Sammy died, giving a huge shock to everyone. She chooses to do her first year exams at the end of year, and passes into second year with a 70%. She stays with Tara over the summer break at the farm.

Dance Academy: The Movie[]

Kat is first seen on a poster that is attached to the back of a taxi advertising the TV show that she is starring in. She is then seen on the phone with Tara after her failed National Ballet audition. Kat tells Tara to come to New York to see what opportunities are there for her. Tara comes to New York and goes to the studio where Kat is shooting her TV show and the two share an excited reunion hug. Kat and Tara then go out and about in New York and eventually end of back in Kat's hotel room where they talk until it is time for Tara's audition at the American Ballet Company. Kat is seen a few times in passing as Tara continues to go to auditons. Occasionally she and Tara go out to a night club. Kat and Tara are a the night club on night when Kat tells her they will go off and have fun in order to make Tara feel better. Kat then comes back and tells Tara she has to make a quick appearance at a party for a big director. Kat asks Tara no to hate her for having to bail and Kat's costar Xavier says "why would she hate you? She's getting free food, free place to stay, and free plane tickets.". This prompts Tara to tell Kat that she will pay her back and Kat tries to insist that she isn't worried about the money but that Tara is not making any progress in New York. Tara then tells Kat that Kat never has to worry about anything because she is already living her dream. The two then continue to argue and eventually Tara walks off in the dark streets of New York. Kat is not seen again until Olly calls Tara to tell her that a nude photo of Kat has been leaked online. Tara tries to call Kat but she is seen ignoring that calls as she cries in bed watching the news story about her photo leak. Kat is then seen at the hospital after Ben is admitted. She sees Tara and the two share a tearful embrace. After this Kat is seen again surrounding Ben along with Abigail, Tara, Christian, Olly, and Mrs. Raine. Kat tells them that she wishes she could blame the photo leak on Xavier but that she did it intentionally to seem edgy for a movie role that she did not land. She also tells her friends that her TV show has been put completely on hold because the network was not happy with the leak. She and Ben later char in his hospital bed while they wait to watch Tara's piece and the NYBG. The two share flirtacious remarks and seem as though they may be attracted to one another. Kat is seen for the last time back in Sydney where she is picked up and kissed by Ben, confirming that the pair are dating.

Relationships[]

Tara Webster[]

Kat first met Tara when she asked her for directions to the Girl's changing rooms. As a joke, Kat gave her the wrong directions, leading her to the Boy's instead. But when Tara was caught for breaking curfew, Kat covered for her leading to a lasting friendship. But Tara had fallen for Kat's brother, Ethan, and Kat told her that he will break her heart. But she went out with him anyway. Kat was fine with that, (just a little 'vomit inducing') but when Tara broke Ethan's heart by cheating on him with Christian, Kat wasn't so OK with that. Things were a bit rocky until their camp when Petra took away their clothes while they were having a shower and they were forced to work together. Kat then told Tara that she needed her, even if she didn't need Kat. They had a steady friendship until the end of the year.

At the start of the next year, Tara and Kat were still best friends. They were until Christian started to develop feelings for Kat and flirting with her. Tara heard one of these moments over a walkie talkie. Tara was angry and Kat said that nothing was going to happen, and Tara said, "But you want it to". Tara was still annoyed with Kat and Christian for a few episodes, but then Tara realized that she was over Christian, and she missed Kat. She organised for Kat to come with the second year's on their excursion to the circus. Tara said for Grace and Kat to go on the trapeze together to become friends. This didn't work out, leaving Kat accusing Tara for trying to make her embarrassed for revenge. Tara and Kat went on the trapeze next. Tara was obviously nervous, and Kat saw this and she said, "I've got you!" and Tara said, "I know!" And they caught each other, leaving them the only couple to do so. When they landed, they gave each other a big hug, and Grace clapping reluctantly. When Kat broke up with Christian, Tara wanted her to talk about it with her but Kat said it was boring, because she knew that Christian had to tell Tara himself. Kat decides to stay with Tara over the summer break.

Sammy Lieberman[]

Sammy and Kat started the season as very close friends. Throughout the first season the two were often insperable and on occasion seemed closer than Kat/Tara or Sammy/Tara. Sammy and Kat were in the same room at first, but then Sammy moved in with Christian. Sammy and Kat have a very stable relationship, and no dramas occured in the first year. They along with Tara were a trio of best friends.

Kat also helped Sammy when his feelings for Christian confused him, she supported him and helped him sort through what they meant. Kat was very supportive of Sammy when he became a representive of Australia in the Prix de Fonteyn. She highly supported Sammy when he opened up about his relationship with Ollie Lloyd, jumping up and down screaming "Yay!" and also stating that "he is gorgeous". She was absolutely devastated when Sammy died. She told about how the students were his family too, not just his friends.

Christian Reed[]

Christian and Kat were friends in first year, not really close but close enough. Kat has a crush on Christian, though, but she didn't show it much. In second year, Christian told Kat that he liked her, and they kissed. Kat knew it was wrong, and said that it wouldn't work (Tara and Christian were broken up). That didn't stop Christian

from flirting with her. Tara heard over a walkie talkie that Christian and Kat kissed, and she was angry. Christian and Kat eventually became a couple, and Tara gave her blessing to their relationship. Then Kat realized that Christian was still in love with Tara, and ended their relationship. He was shocked because he hadn't realized that he still loved Tara. Zach noticed in class that they weren't working well together, and told them to sort it out. Christian said that he doesn't care that Tara is with Ben, and Kat said, "just admit, you're in love with someone who doesn't love you back." Christian finally realized that she was right, and went to tell Tara that he still loved her. but Sammy's death postponed and complicated the matters.

Ethan Karamakov[]

Ethan is Kat's half-brother. They get along really well, though in the first series Kat wasn't impressed with how he was treating his ex/girlfriends. Particularly his girlfriend Isabelle. She is unhappy when Tara and Christian are going out, but when Ethan goes to move she tries to give him a reason to stay; Tara. In the second season after the death of Sammy Lieberaman Ethan become very caring towards Kat and would call her very often, though Kat would go on to tell Ethan she was fine when on the phone Ethan could tell that she was not and dropped everything to come back and take care of Kat. Ethan and Kat made plans to spend the summer together in Barcelona however he would later go on to spend the summer with Abigail while Kat went on to spend the summer with Tara

Abigail Armstrong[]

When they were kids Abigail and Kat were best friends. They did everything together, they thought they would be friends forever, but when they were 11, when Abigail wanted to foucus on ballet, Kat thought she didn't want to be friends anymore so she ended their friendship leaving Abigail heartbroken.

Kat and Abigail have a strange love-hate relationship. In First Year, Kat didn't like Abigail very much because she was best friends with Tara and Abigail kept picking on Tara. At the end of First year when Kat finds out that Ethan is moving she bakes a lot of cupcakes (her way of expressing sadness). Abigail talks to her and tells her that she needs to find something for Ethan that is worth staying for. She gives her a hint by pulling out a leotard and saying, "Tara. Is always sneaking her stuff in my basket. Can that girl seriously not afford her own washing powder?" To which Kat smiles and walks away.

Abikat

In second year Kat moves in with Abigail after Abigail shows a slight sign of friendship by patting her on the arm and standing up for her in front of the first years. Kat asks if they are becoming friends and Abigail replies, "I really hope not." When Sammy died Abigail clung to Kat, crying her eyes out and heartbroken. Now they're friends again.

(See Abigail)

Grace Whitney[]

Kat and Grace never really liked each other. Kat just let Grace tag along after her and Tara because she knew that Grace had been there for Tara when she had her back broken. Grace accepts Kat, but she wishes that Tara was still hers. When Tara tells Kat that Grace has left the academy, Kat gives her friend a sympathetic hug; but is probably happy.

(See Grace)

Ben Tickle[]

Ben had a crush on Kat, but Kat didn't have a crush on Ben. Ben tried to do things to make Kat like him, but it wasn't working. Kat described him as a puppy, and when the puppy gets too annoying, you have to gently push the puppy away.

When Kat is auditioning for various dance opportunities, Ben becomes her "manager". Ben tags along at cheerleading tryouts and tryouts for the Moulin Rouge. They become better friends during this time.

Then Kat started going out with Christian and Ben gave up and moved on. Kat and Ben are now good friends.

In Dance Academy: The Movie, the two are seen kissing at the end of the film once everyone is back in Sydney, confirming that they have started a relationship.

(See Ben)

Natasha Willis[]

Kat doesn't get along with her mother. Natasha is very self absorbed and has always put her needs before Kat's. In fact, Kat's rebellious nature may be a way to get her mother's attention. Natasha is not proud that some of the things Kat does. Kat's hate for ballet stems from their bad relationship.

In season 2, Natasha makes an effort to have a normal family, as a way to make amends for the way she had treated Kat in the past, but when Natasha gets an offer to go to Berlin, Kat convinces her to take it, because she knows her mother loves to dance too much to give it up. It would not be fair to her mother.
